Stanislas Bruley des Varannes is a former intern and specialist registrar in the hospitals of Nantes (France). After a research residency in digestive physiology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in the USA, he was appointed Professor of Gastroenterology at the University Hospital of Nantes in 1995. He worked in Jean-Paul Galmiche's team to develop, in particular, the management of functional digestive pathologies, and to set up clinical research in digestive diseases. He contributed to the establishment of the Clinical Investigation Centre at the University Hospital of Nantes and to the development of translational research in neurogastroenterology.
He was Director of Clinical Research and Innovation at the University Hospital of Nantes from 2003 to 2008. He was Head of the Hepato-Gastroenterology Department and of the Institute of Digestive Diseases at the University Hospital of Nantes until 2017. He was in charge of the Fondation d'entreprises SantéDige (foundation of corporate benefactors) until 2018. He is currently Head of the University Hospital Unit (PHU1) at the University Hospital of Nantes. He was Assistant Secretary of the French National Society of Gastroenterology.
His main areas of interest are functional pathologies of the digestive tract, gastrointestinal motility and sensitivity disorders and associated methods of exploration, digestive physiology and pharmacology, the enteric nervous system, the gut-brain axis and the digestive microbiota.
