Bruno PotPhD, Microbiologist, Brussels University

Bruno Pot started an academic career in 1983 as a microbial taxonomist at the Laboratory of Microbiology in Gent, Belgium, where he obtained a Ph.D. in Microbiology. He then took part in many EU research projects on lactic acid bacteria and developed a particular interest in bioinformatics.

After 14 years in research he became Science Manager Benelux and Science Manager Europe for the company Yakult Europe in the Netherlands. In 2001 he joined Applied Maths, a young Belgian bioinformatics company, taking up a part-time position as Director of Business Development. In parallel, he became Research Director of the Lactic Acid Bacteria and Mucosal Immunity Laboratory of the Institut Pasteur de Lille (France) specializing in fundamental research in the field of probiotics.

During the same period, he started teaching food microbiology, hygiene and ecology as a visiting professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). In 2016, Bruno returned to Yakult Europe in the Netherlands as Science Director Europe. He continues teaching at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Bruno is a member of the Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and related genera, and President of the Pharmabiotic Research Institute (PRI).

He is also a founding member of the ESLP and actively involved in activities of IPA Europe, ILSI Europe and ISAPP relating to probiotics.
